Create an AccountA MOSSOP LEATHER INITIATIVE
We are more than just a tannery.
Our Leatherprint is an awareness that everything we do has an impact on the world around us.
Conscious of this result, means we are actively involved in creating a more sustainable future in our production of leather.
At Mossop, conscious decision making is critical. Innovations in our leather making process help us to become more sustainable and environmentally friendly. We are actively trying to offset carbon emissions and water recycling programs.
Striving to create a better planet for our future generations, we are committed to ensuring a safe, compliant, and inclusive working environment for our people. We enrich the lives of both our team members as well as those operating in our direct community.
We share information about our facilities and our suppliers across the value chain. We give inside information on how we produce our leather and where it's derived. We source our hides from reputable suppliers. Our chemical suppliers use renewable resources in producing their product, which enables us to work toward a less intrusive circular economy.
ENVIRONMENTAL ETHOS
At Mossop, conscious decision making is critical. Innovations in our leather making process help us to become more sustainable and environmentally friendly. We are actively trying to offset carbon emissions and water recycling programs. We appreciate that all life on earth is under threat of extinction. We’re using the resources we have—our capital, our society, our decision and our creativity—to do something about it.
Our ongoing conservation efforts address issues around water scarcity in our region and the effective management of energy sources within our business operations.
Our in-house Research & Development Centre drives sustainable innovations across our supply chain. Using a food industry by-product, we convert waste into renewable materials and take part in various recycling programs.
We are the first tannery in the world to plant a (Porkbush)Portulacaria Afra garden and will reserve half a hectare to grow this wonderplant. The garden will sequester 5000kgs of carbon dioxide per year from the atmosphere. Follow our journey through our Instagram page.
One of our main objectives from a tannery perspective is to join the Leather Working Group by 2023. The Leather Working Group (LWG) has developed and maintained a protocol that assesses the environmental compliance and performance capabilities of leather manufacturers, which promotes sustainable and appropriate environmental business practices within the leather industry.
We believe in empowering people to reach their full potential. To this extent, we have formed partnerships with our employees. From these partnerships, they have developed their own business in conjunction with Mossop
Mossop Leathers is one of the first South African companies to achieve ISO 9001: 2015 standard certification. The Standard is based on a number of quality management principles: i.e.: a strong customer focus, the motivation/implication of top management, process approach and continual improvement.
Our Learnership Program empowers employees to study and learn about the inner working of the tannery. The skill learnt can be applied to other industries as well.
Mossop Leather provides funds to the Ma’s Vir Wellington group. Whose main focus is caring, feeding and teaching 160 children between the ages of 3 and 6 years
While we are still reliant on state power, we run ongoing feasibility and scalability trials to help reduce our energy footprint. We also create energy through steam power for several of our finishing machines.

To reduce our transport footprint, we partner with distribution centres both locally and abroad. In this way, we minimize the need for inbound air and day-to-day road shipments.

We recycle 15 million cups of coffee worth of water each year as part of our tanning process. Our rainwater harvesting systems and recycling initiatives continue to lessen our reliance on municipality water supply.
We are using our buffing and shaving dust to create byproducts for the construction industry. We have also digitized various internal processes to reduce paper waste. We also reduce, reuse, and recycle our packaging material to decrease the waste generated in the sale of our products..
