Our ongoing conservation efforts address issues around water scarcity in our region and the effective management of energy sources within our business operations.
We are the first tannery in the world to plant a (Porkbush)Portulacaria Afra garden and will reserve half a hectare to grow this wonderplant. The garden will sequester 5000kgs of carbon dioxide per year from the atmosphere. Follow our journey through our Instagram page.
One of our main objectives is to be apart of this multi-stakeholder Leather Working Group by 2022. The Leather Working Group (LWG) has developed and maintained a protocol that assesses the environmental compliance and performance capabilities of leather manufacturers and promotes sustainable and appropriate environmental business practices within the leather industry.
Our in-house Research & Development Centre drives sustainable innovations across our supply chain. Using a food industry by-product, we convert waste into renewable materials and take part in various recycling programs.
We believe in empowering people to reach their full potential. To this extent, we have formed partnerships with our employees. From these partnerships, they have developed their own business in conjunction with Mossop.
As a diverse, uniquely structured company, we are committed to the wellbeing of our employees and various stakeholders.

Mossop Leather provides funds to the Ma’s Vir Wellington group. Whose main focus is caring, feeding and teaching 160 children between the ages of 3 and 6 years? These children cannot afford to be in a daycare, creche or preschool and are left to play in the street or surrounding areas where they can get hurt or abused. The children are in developing forming years, and laying a good foundation will help them make better decisions later in life. The group teach and inspire young and old children through different projects, song, dance and activities.
Ma’s Vir Wellington desire is to serve and equip and empower both children and parents. To help bring transformation and reformation to their communities, through a process of healing hearts and developing skills, which Mossop could utilize in our tannery someday.
To reduce our transport footprint, we partner with distribution centres both locally and abroad. In this way, we minimise the need for inbound air shipments as well as small day-to-day road shipments.
We are using our buffer and shaving dust to create byproducts for packaging, construction and fashion industry. We have also digitised various internal processes to reduce paper waste. We also reduce, reuse, and recycle our packaging material to decrease the waste generated in the sale of our products.
We recycle 15 million cups of coffee worth of water each year as part of our tanning process. Our rainwater harvesting systems and recycling initiatives continue to lessen our reliance on municipality water supply.
While we are still reliant on state power, we run ongoing feasibility and scalability trials to help reduce our energy footprint. We also create energy through steam power for several of our finishing machines.
All chemicals supplied to us are REACH compliant. REACH is a regulation of the European Union, adopted to improve the protection of human health as well as the environment.
